Georgia NAACP Honors C.T. Vivian at the State Capitol Building

July 25, 2017 Atlanta – Portrait of C.T. Vivian at his home on Tuesday, July 25, 2017. The National Monuments Foundation will be acquiring and managing the world-class library of Atlanta Civil Rights icon, C.T. Vivian. The library will be housed in the new Cook Park in Vine City. Vivian lived in the same Vine City neighborhood that will border Cook Park where his library is to be constructed under a 101-foot Peace Column. The 6,000 volume C.T. Vivian Library is one of the most impressive private collections in the city.

Dr. C.T. Vivian was a legendary civil rights icon. His courage, perseverance, and passion for Black equality has paved the way for our freedom today. Vivian’s work aligned him with other legendary civil rights icons like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rep. John Lewis. He was fearless in pursuit of freedom, even when brutality faced him on the steps of the Dallas County courthouse in Selma, Alabama, while standing for the rights of Black lives to vote. Now, his legacy will be honored forever.

Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013 by President Barack Obama, Rev. C.T. Vivian will continue to be acknowledged by his commendable efforts during a processional held at the State Capitol Wednesday at 11:15 A.M. EST, where he will be “Lying in State,” covered by the Georgia Flag. Rev. James Woodall, state president of the Georgia NAACP will open up with prayer at 12:00 P.M. EST.

“We are honored to play a small part in honoring the life and legacy of the Rev. C.T. Vivian. #OnwardTowardFreedom,” President Woodall tweets as he accepts the invitation to be apart of the processional on behalf of the Georgia NAACP.

“In 1968, Governor Lester Maddox refused to allow the body of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to lie in state after he was assassinated. It’s an honor to recognize our civil rights legend in Georgia in a way that was not always available to us.”

The service will be held in the rotunda of the State Capitol. The opening prayer will be followed by a speech from Al Vivian, the son of C.T. Vivian and end with closing comments by Governor Brian Kemp.

11:30 a.m. – The casket is set to arrive at the State Capitol Building, where it will be moved into the rotunda.

12 p.m. – The Vivian family will be received by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, in the governor’s office. They will then be escorted by the governor to the casket.

12:30 p.m. – Georgia NAACP President, Rev. James Woodall will open with a prayer followed by Al Vivian, son of C.T. Vivian, who will speak for the family and closing comments by Gov. Kemp.

12:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. – C.T. Vivian’s casket will be “Lying in State” covered by the Georgia Flag.

3:30 p.m. – The casket will then be moved across Capitol grounds to a horse-drawn open carriage. The carriage will proceed north on Piedmont to the historic Auburn Avenue where they will travel east.

4:10 p.m. – The carriage will arrive in front of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference National Office where they will pause for a photo opportunity. C.T. served as The National Director of Affiliates and strategist for every Southern Christian Leadership Conference organization.

4:30 p.m. – The procession will conclude in front of Martin Luther King Jr. tomb located in The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park. C.T. worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement.
